Award Winner, 10 Gigabit Ethernet: Smartbits TeraMetrics 10 Gigabit
Ethernet Test Module.
Spirent Communications' 10 Gigabit Ethernet Test Module
provides the vital proof that other 10 Gigabit networking products
meet required specifications. Without such test platforms, development
of any product to meet such a standard would be impossible. (This
product supports XENPAK modules and is ideal for testing new high
speed metro applications)
10 Gigabit Ethernet
10 Gigabit Ethernet opens the door for unprecedented
capacity, speed, and distance for Ethernet-based networks. Instrumental
in developing this groundbreaking standard, Spirent Communications
provides the first and only complete line of fully compliant 10
GbE test and measurement products.
Interfaces Supported
Test Solutions
10 Gigabit Switch/ Routers Testing
Spirent features 10 Gigabit analyzer modules that can:
- Transmit and analyze traffic on the data plane and
control plane simultaneously
- Perform Layer 2 testing with RFC 2544 automated
test scripts
- Perform Layer 3 testing (including IPv4/IPv6, TOS/Diffserve,
VLAN, MulticastIP, MPLS) via the SmartFlow application
- Perform Routing functional testing using the AX-4000
GUI
- Provide Routing performance testing with the TeraRouting
Test suite (Supports OSPF, BGP, RIP, ISIS, VLAN)
XAUI Chipsets
Spirent provides testing of the XAUI interface for
design verification and performance testing of XAUI Chipsets.
Traffic generation and analysis features
include:
- Frame size 40 -16000 bytes, Fixed or Random within
preset limits. All transmit streams may have random small frame
sizes without limits.
- Inter-packet gaps Fixed or Random (user can set
limits from 9.6nSec to 1.6 sec)
- Frame Content- User may select from a range of different
background patterns on a per stream basis or customize each byte
in an frame editor window
- 512 unique streams and millions of Flows supported
through cycling IP address or other fields in the frame
- Latency - Supports Min, Max, Average Latency and
standard deviation Can measure latency, Packet loss and out of
Sequence in one test iteration and correlate to load
- Data Integrity test
- Out of Sequence Test
- Negative testing: illegal sizes frames and frames
with incorrect FCS can be generated.
- Preamble tests. Spirent supports the industries
most advanced features for generation and analysis of preamble
at 10-Gigabit rates. Please contact Spirent for further details.
XAUI Specific features
- The XLW-3720/1 supports Read and Write to any part
of the MDIO registers.

XENPAK Tranceivers
XENPAK transceiver manufacturers and systems manufacturers
need to test compliance to the XENPAK MSA and the IEEE 802.3ae standards.
The Spirent XLW-3720/1 module is the only tester on the market in
full compliance to both 10 Gig Ethernet standards. Spirent has implemented
an APS on our test module to comply with the XENPAK MSA.
To test the XENPAK transceiver in a benign environment,
it is recommended to plug it into an evaluation/demonstration board
on the workbench and connect to Spirent's SmartBits XAUI interface
via 16 SMA cables. Spirent supplies 16 x 36' cables with the XAUI
Extender unit, which have been pre-tested to ensure high signal
integrity of the XAUI signals.
SmartBits can perform functional tests to verify the
transceiver is reporting the Link Alarms status, set the LASI control
registers, read the XENPAK profile information and set local or
remote loopback modes.
For traffic testing, the test module can generate customized
Layer 2 traffic through the transceiver or use industry standard
patterns, CRPAT & CJPAT. The user can easily monitor counters
in real time to see if the transceiver can forward line rate traffic
without errors.
The SmartBits can capture line rate traffic and has
filters to capture errored frames.
