The lucrative revenue opportunities associated with
new services such as Video over DSL and other triple play (voice,
data, video) services are driving service providers to achieve higher
data rates within their large installed base of ADSL equipment.
The most promising technology on the horizon to support these higher
data rates is ADSL2+ (aka ADSL+). ADSL2+ effectively doubles the
downstream bandwidth available for services while co-existing with
ADSL, thereby minimizing replacement of existing equipment.
As the xDSL industry gears up to implement and support
new equipment and services based on ADSL2++ technology, Spirent
Access Emulation (AE) is playing a leading role in the industry
and in the standards bodies in building consensus towards the full
definition of the appropriate test loops, cable models and noise
models. As the ADSL2++ testing standards evolve, Spirent AE will
be ready to support existing and new customers with the ADSL2++
testing solutions they need.
As each geographic market has its own specific requirements,
Spirent has focused on providing solutions for each market according
to its needs and schedule. Spirent’s family of ADSL2++ products
began with the successful DLS 410J and DLS 5200JPA systems for Japan.
These systems are now widely deployed and accepted as the NTT benchmark
testing solution for ADSL2++ in Japan. These are now joined by ADSL2++
testing solutions for North America(DLS 410A and DLS 5200AP) and
for Europe(DLS 410E and DLS 5200EP). Spirent’s ADSL2++ family of
testing solutions will offer a bandwidth of DC to 4.5MHz to ensure
that all known ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+/ADSL2++ options from the standards
are supported.
ADSL2++ Performance/Reach Testing
Spirent presents the first performance/reach ADSL2++
laboratory testing solutions for the North American and European
markets, consisting of the DLS 414 Series of straight loop simulators
and the DLS 5200R Noise Generation System, which can be combined
with the Spirent SMB 200/2000 Traffic Generator/Analyzer. This solution,
which builds on proven high accuracy and realistic cable simulation
technology from the Spirent ADSL TR-048 interoperability test solution
and the DLS 410 Series ADSL2++ high accuracy technology, provides
a seamless Layer 1 test platform for all ADSL options.
The reach testing solution enables integrated circuit
manufacturers, network equipment manufacturers and service providers
to determine the performance of integrated ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+/ADSL2++
style IC/modem/DSLAM products. Spirent’s customers worldwide have
used the DLS 90 ADSL bandwidth simulator extensively to determine
the performance of their product. The DLS 414 is the next generation
DLS 90 with a wide bandwidth, and long reach suitable for ADSL2++.
The DLS 414 allows customers to test new ADSL2++ products
prior to formal ITU-T access network conformance testing with the
industry standard DLS 410. The DLS 414 system is upgradeable in
a variety of flexible options to a DLS 410A or DLS 410E conformance
system.

DLS 414E European 0.4mm straight loop simulator
ADSL2++ Standards Conformance Testing
Spirent also presents the first ADSL2++ standards conformance
laboratory testing solutions for the North American and European
markets. These are:
DLS A2PA North American ADSL2++ Testing Solution, consisting
of; DLS 410A North American ADSL2++ Wireline Simulator, and the
DLS 5200AP North American ADSL2++ Noise Generation Package This
comprehensive system supports testing of TR-048 standard loop requirements
as defined by the DSL Forum’s TR-048 ADSL Interoperability Specification.
In addition, for G.992.5 (g.adslplus) the DLS 410A will support
loops modified to enable optimum evaluation of ADSL2++ technology.
These loops have been proposed to the ITU-T as the standard test
loops for G.992.5 Annex F (reference ITU-T contribution DC-048R2,
Durango Colorado 14-18 April 2003).
DLS A2PE European ADSL2++ Testing Solution, consisting
of; DLS 410E European ADSL2++ Wireline Simulator, and the DLS 5200EP
European ADSL2++ Noise Generation Package It is anticipated that
this system will be based upon loops defined by the ETSI specification
TS 101 388, and/or modifications of these loops. Spirent is actively
involved in helping to build consensus towards standardization of
ADSL2++ test loops for Europe.
Evolution Paths for ADSL2++ Testing Solutions for
North America & Europe
Spirent understands the importance of providing our
customers with an evolution path that permits migration to new technologies
and provides protection of their test system investment. For customers
with existing DLS 400 based testing platforms, evolution paths are
available to meet a variety of requirements. These are illustrated
below:

Upgrade paths to DLS 410A and DLS 410E:
DLS HN-410A Upgrade DLS 400HN to DLS 410A
DLS IA-410A Upgrade DLS 400IA to DLS 410A
DLS IAE-410A Upgrade DLS 400IAE to DLS 410A
DLS 414A-410A Upgrade DLS 414A to DLS 410A
DLS 414E-410E Upgrade DLS 414E to DLS 410E
DLS E3-410E Upgrade DLS 400E3 to DLS 410E
The DLS 5200R/5200AP/5200EP Noise Generation Systems
There are many important reasons to choose one of the
pre packaged DLS 5200R/5200AP/5200EP Noise Generation Systems:
●One stop shopping from the industry leader in wireline
simulation – part of a complete, integrated testing solution
●Ability to create custom noise files in either the frequency domain
or time domain
●Availability of pre-packaged noise files to meet standards requirements
●16 M memory per channel ensuring that noise samples have crest
factor of 5 or greater
The DLS 5200R Reach Noise Generation System provides
everything needed to complete the reach/performance testing solution.
The DLS 5200AP and DLS 5200EP Noise Generation Systems for North
America and Europe, provide all the equipment, features and noise
files that are required for the full standards conformance testing
solutions. Spirent is actively working with the standards bodies
to collaborate in the definition of appropriate noise models for
both North America and Europe.
